Here's your Cleveland weather forecast from 3News Senior Meteorologist Matt Wintz:
After a rain-soaked Thursday around Northeast Ohio, colder air will continue to move in tonight from the northwest changing our rain over to a wet snow from west to east this evening. By tonight, we'll be all snow across the entire area with accumulations expected — but some more than others.
THE SETUP
An area of low pressure responsible for all the rain today will head east of us bringing a strong northerly flow into Ohio. Not only will this change our rain over to snow as it grabs colder air from Canada, but it will also tap into additional moisture from Lake Erie and Lake Huron.
As a result we'll begin to develop lake effect and lake enhanced snow (snow that already exists from our storm system that becomes slightly heavier with the addition of lake moisture). With a flow out of the north, this will bring snow, not just into our primary snowbelt (Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula counties), but our secondary snowbelt as well (Lorain, Medina, northern Summit counties).
HOW MUCH?
We're expecting this lake effect and lake enhanced snow to continue during the day Friday in these locations with anywhere from 3 to 8 inches possible. There is the potential for isolated higher amounts if the snow remains consistent enough, but this should be the exception rather than the rule.
Outside of these counties, you'll get a hit of wet snow tonight as the system moves out, but flurries and scattered snow showers at best can be expected Friday with little in the way of additional accumulations expected for those locations.
IMPACTS
Both our Friday morning and Friday evening commutes will likely be tricky, especially in those primary and secondary snowbelt locations. Snow covered roads and some blowing snow can be expected as there is a wind component to this with gusts over 30mph possible Friday.
Temps will be on our side--this isn't like the pre-Christmas storm. Arctic air will NOT move in with this system so temps should hover in and around freezing Friday--so road salt will work, but overcoming that will be some of the heavier snowfall rates in the most organized bands.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THIS?
Saturday looks good later in the day and Sunday looks fantastic. Temps will rebound quickly, much like they have this month so far--with 40s and even 50s back in the forecast with another soggy week ahead!
