Clover In My Lawn - Good or Bad?
Are you wondering if clover is a bad sign to see in your lawn?
Other then maybe finding a 4 leaf clover, most people would say NO to clover in their lawn's.
How ever there is several ways to look at this. White Clover which is the most common clover to have in the northern regions on the Untied States,
its what I have here in Minnesota, Clover is a nitrogen fixing plant.
How is that? Well... White Clover exists symbiotically with nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria which produce nodules on the roots and then can convert atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-available form.
White clover stems are smooth to sparsely hairy and grow close to the ground. Leaves are made up of three oval leaflets approximately ¼ to ¾ inch in diameter and arise alternately on stems.
The white flowers that it grows are visited by many pollinators.
White clover is more likely to form large patches in the turf that is not adequately fertilized with nitrogen. Infestations of white clover can be reduced by improving turf density through good establishment procedures and the use of turfgrasses well-adapted to site conditions.
White Clover is best controlled by herbicides containing dicamba, clopyralid, fluroxypyr, and quinclorac. Products containing combinations of these active ingredients usually provide very good control of white clover.
Regrowth of foliage sometimes occurs following spring herbicide applications. Fall applications of herbicides are often the most effective means of controlling white clover.
White clover in lawns can be controlled through proper fertilization and the application of broadleaf herbicides.
