In the year 1991, the Walt Disney Animation team achieved something that had never been done before. With the completion of the dance in Beauty and the Beast, animation history had been made. A fully computer generated background was achieved, rendered with realistic textures, reflections, assets, lights, and shadows. This is the story of how that team accomplished this.
Since that legendary dance, animators across the globe have utilized this process to push the boundaries of what is possible with animation. Every year, more and more studios use the techniques and technology that stemmed from Beauty and the Beast, and it fascinates me every time I see it.
