Francesco Canova da Milano was the most important Italian composer of instrumental music during the Renaissance, hailed as "il divino" by his contemporaries. Born in 1497 in Monza, near Milan, into a family of musicians, he spent most of his career serving successive Popes in Rome: Leo X, Clement VII, and Paul III. His music is brilliant, passionate, complex, and virtuosic, yet perfectly balanced in structure.
A total of 124 compositions have survived, mostly ricercars, fantasies, and intabulations of various pieces. It is likely that a large portion of his work, such as his dance music, has been lost.
Of his lute duets, only two pieces remain: Canon and La Spagna.
In 1559, the Flemish musician Ioanne Matelart published a collection of lute music containing seven lute duet arrangements of Francesco’s solo fantasias.
A recently discovered Fantasia for two lutes by Francesco, found in a manuscript in Castelfranco Veneto, is an important addition to the lute repertoire. This duet is structured similarly to La Spagna, with one lute playing a chordal accompaniment (the “tenore”) and the other developing continuous diminutions.
