Crafting model trains is the hobby of choice for many people the world over. This is because those who enjoy doing so are not only able to amass their own collections of trainsets, tracks and other related objects, but also get to learn quite a bit more about trains and the hobby in general by doing so.
When you talk about model trains, you first have to learn that there are three basic aspects to trains. First up is the scale. This refers to the ratio of the size of the model to the actual train model it is modeled after. You can find model trains in these different sizes to fit all needs and considerations such as space requirements and budgets. There are four basic scales, namely G, O, HO, and N, all of which differ in terms of the aforementioned ratio. G-scale trains, which have ratios of 1:22, and O-scale trains, which have ratios of 1:48, are considered large-scale trains. By comparison, HO-scale trains have ratios of 1:87 and N-scale trains have ratios of 1:160, making them quite a bit smaller than the large-scale trains. There are several other ratios, albeit less popular ones, which are even smaller than the HO and N ratios; these are the S ratio (with a scale of 1:64), the TT scale (with a scale of 1:120), and the Z scale (with a scale of 1:220).
The second of the basic aspects relating to these types of models is the gauge. This is basically defined as the standard size of the track between the two parallel rails used by model trains. There are two basic gauges. The first is the standard gauge, in which the distance between the two rails measures four feet and eight and a half inches. The second is the narrow gauge, which can measure anywhere from three feet to three and a half feet between the two parallel rails.
The third and last of these basic aspects is the scenery. Some enthusiasts may opt for nothing more than the existing backdrop of whatever place or room their model train sets and tracks are located in. Others, on the other hand, may decide to go all out and craft actual model landscapes with features including model hills, valleys, mountains, rock formations, people, and even streams, rivers or waterfalls. They may even elect to copy an actual train route if they so desire. Of prime consideration is the fact that the train set must not be impeded by these enhancements; the train must be able to continue to run in a loop. The shape of the track can be a basic oval or double oval, a figure eight, a dogbane shape - anything that the enthusiast can want, as long as the train can run on it unimpeded and not in danger of derailment due to the shape or any feature of the scenery.
