After taking office in June of 2016, the Phillippines President Rodrigo Duterte has gained a worldwide reputation for his stringent anti-drug policies, which have led to breakouts of vigilante violence across the nation. Less known, however, is his equally vindictive campaign against the media and free speech. In her documentary "A Thousand Cuts," director Ramona S. Diaz puts the spotlight on Filipina journalist Maria Ressa, as she fights against censorship, persecution and threats to report on the truths of Duterte's regime.
