We took off at 2204 local time into bright sunshine. Trying to explain our route to the AFIS at Honningsvåg (not far from the North Cape) was a little tricky. He wanted to ensure that we were well away from the scheduled traffic (which we were), but I don’t think that he understood what we were doing out there at that time of night, especially as we had passed within a few miles of our destination much earlier in our flight.
Flying along Porsangerfjorden towards the North cape felt fairly remote; big cliffs, lots of sea, late at night, with dramatic lighting thanks to the low sun peeking through gaps in the dark clouds. Once we got to the North Cape I was initially surprised to see lots of tourists and camper vans near the globe monument on the 307 m cliff. It was about 2330 local time, so everyone had gathered to see the midnight sun. Hopefully they were equally surprised to see a little Cherokee bumbling past!
