The I-405 is a crucial route in California, heavily traveled by both commuters and freight haulers, making it the busiest and most congested freeway in the US. The freeway has played a critical role in the development of dozens of cities and suburbs along its path through Los Angeles and Orange counties.
The Orange County 405 Highway Project is a massive design-build project, and the largest to be released in Caltrans history. It was bid in 2016, and ground broke in mid-2018 after two years of design work. The project, which spans 16 miles of the 405, is north of the John Wayne Airport and extends north of the 405/605 connector. The joint venture of Astaldi and OHL, OC 405 Partners, was awarded the project. Once completed, the 405 Improvement Project will provide safe and reliable multimodal travel throughout the region and enable Orange County to keep pace with expected job, housing, and population growth.
Frank Stevenson, the Roadway Manager for OC 405 Partners, explained that the project involves the demolition and rebuilding of 31 bridges throughout the corridor and the movement of several million cubic yards of material. The drainage covers several hundred thousand miles of piping. The Concrete Highway Paving for this project is one of the largest CRCP quantities to date for Caltrans. They have 288,000 yd³ of concrete to place on the outside, widening through the corridor. The mainline will be CRCP, while all the ramps and collectors will be JPCP.
To supply all the load transfer steel products and concrete paving accessories for the JPCP, American Highway partnered with White Cap, a building materials/construction & industrial supply company. Ron Meskis, the CEO of American Highway, expressed his gratitude to White Cap for the opportunity to work together on such a high-profile project. He also commended OC 405 Partners for being excellent end-users of American Highway products and working closely with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to optimize the project's design and layout. Meskis gave special thanks to Frank Stevenson for his instrumental role in making this a successful project for OCTA, OC 405 Partners, White Cap, and American Highway.
