Today a trip in the north west of Switzerland, heading through some small towns and valleys towards the french border. Interesting is that it was the main connection between Basel and France during the time that Elsass to the north-west of Basel was part of Germany. There was so much traffic, that Porrentruy as a marshalling yard, was ranked 4th in Switzerland in traffic volume.
From Porrentruy there were two border crossings by rail. One continues from Porrentruy to the French border station of Delle and then on to Belfort in France. The other connection required a change of direction in Porrentruy and continued through Bonfol into France. Today the line ends in Bonfol.
Almost every station along our trip used to be served by SBB Cargo with wagonload freight. Unfortunately SBB Cargo has made many cuts over the years, especially if less than 1 wagon per day was being transported. Liesberg, Delémont, Glovelier & Porrentruy are the only stations still being served currently, with the possibility of future car transport traffic in Courgenay, even though cars are presently transported by truck.
