(19 Aug 2020) Health workers in Rome's Ciampino airport on Wednesday tested passengers arriving from Valencia, Spain, as the numbers of coronavirus cases continued to rise.
According to Italian Health Ministry figures, there were 642 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours. Wednesday's figure reflects the big increase in testing, with more than 71,000 tests carried out since Tuesday as thousands of passengers are getting tested on their arrival.
Last week, the government made testing mandatory for anyone coming from Spain, Greece, Croatia and Malta, countries which have been experiencing a lot of new virus cases lately.
Passengers at Ciampino airport said the testing was very efficient and welcomed the opportunity to learn if they were carrying the virus.
Health authorities are worried that young people's general tendency to shun mask-wearing when social distancing is impossible, such as at parties, bars and night clubs, is favouring the spread of the virus.
Italy recorded a total of 255,278 confirmed coronavirus cases on Wednesday, while the death toll rose to 35,412 with the addition of seven new fatalities.
