Visit to St. Catherines Museum & Welland Canals Centre where Lock #3 is located. Lock 3 viewing platform is an ideal place to witness ships maneuvering the lock system. Ships are raised 100 metres (326 feet) by 7 Locks within 11 km (17 miles) and sail from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie.
The Welland Canal allows ships to bypass Niagara Falls and conquer the Niagara Escarpment, in order to continue through the Great Lakes System. The 5 Great Lakes comprise the largest and most far-reaching inland waterway in the world. The Canal, along with the St. Lawrence Seaway allow ships to travel between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Superior.
