Greece to buy MQ-9 Drones from USA:
The Greek Minister of National Defense announced to Parliament that he will be allocating 400 million euros for the purchase of three American MQ-9B Sea Guardian unmanned aerial vehicles, and their requisite ground control stations.
Greece and Turkey are in dispute over the Control of the Aegean Sea and eastern Mediterranean region. The urgency of the Purchase comes from the recent incident in June when a Turkish Bayraktar U A V was observed flying over Greek territory.
The MQ-9 is a larger and a heavy aircraft, and is the first hunter-killer drone designed for long-endurance high-altitude surveillance.
The MQ9 drone is manufactured by the american defence manufacturer General Atomics, and in December 2019, the company demonstrated the benefits of the MQ-9B SeaGuardian to the Hellenic Air Force. The drone can function anti-submarine warfare by deploying sonobuoys.
Controlled by a ground system, the Reaper has 84-foot wingspan that operates with a turboprop engine generating 950-horsepower. The drone has takeoff weight of approximately 7,000 pounds, with a maximum ceiling height of 52,000 feet and an endurance of 36 hours.
The MQ-9 is fitted with six stores pylons that can carry a variety of weapons, including the Paveway II laser-guided bomb, the Hellfire II air-to-ground missiles, the AIM-9 Sidewinder, and the Joint Direct Attack Munition. The Reaper is operated by the US Air Force, the US Customs and Border Protection, and the militaries of 14 other countries.
