The thermostat and pressure release valve on a water heater was designed to help keep your family safe by preventing a high pressure explosion. This valve on your water heater should never be removed or disabled, and should also be tested periodically to ensure that it's working properly. Hot water may scald skin and these valves occasionally get stuck in the open position, causing a flood. Proceed with caution if you choose to test the T&P valve yourself.
Relief valves usually discharge for one of two reasons:
1. excessive pressure buildup over 150 psi
2. temperature inside the tank exceeds 210 degrees F
In either case, the pressure relief valve will open to prevent an explosion. If you notice water pooling around your water heater and there's no sign of a leak, it's likely that your temperature and pressure relief valve has recently opened.
In addition to ensuring that your house has an ideal water pressure coming in from the main line, make sure that the thermostat on your water heater isn't set too high. You should test your valve at least once a year to ensure it's not being blocked by sediment buildup.
