When Shelma Jun was a kid, she liked to hike, climb, and snowboard. Doing so got her labeled a tomboy—a term she resented. Why was having fun outdoors associated with being a boy? It was only years later, in her 30s, that Jun realized the labeling was just society’s typecasting. So she decided to do something about it.
A few years ago, Jun founded Flash Foxy, a women’s climbing community that hosts women’s-only climbing events and festivals across the country. The goal isn't to make women better climbers, but to get more women climbing—and it seems to be working. The first event sold out in under a minute and the group is now forty thousand strong.
