Francis Poulenc (1899 - 1963):
AVE VERUM CORPUS
Francis Poulenc was a French composer and pianist. His compositions include solo piano works, chamber music, choral pieces, operas, ballets, and orchestral concert music. He was among the first composers to see the importance of the gramophone, and he recorded extensively from 1928 onwards. During the 21st century more attention has been given to his serious works, with many new productions of the operas "Dialogues des Carmélites" and "La Voix humaine" worldwide, and numerous live and recorded performances of his songs and choral music.
It was mentioned here earlier that this piece is part of the opera "Dialogues des Carmélites" (it tells a somewhat fictionalised version of the story of the Martyrs of Compiègne, Carmelite nuns who, in 1794 during the closing days of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, were guillotined in Paris for refusing to renounce their vocation). However, that's not the case. The hymn indeed is included, but the music is different.
Ave verum corpus Christi,
natum ex Maria Virgine,
Vere passum,
immolatum in cruce pro homine.
Ave verum corpus Christi,
natum ex Maria Virgine.
Hail, true Body,
born of the Virgin Mary,
having truly suffered,
sacrificed on the cross for mankind.
Hail, true Body,
born of the Virgin Mary.
