APPEA CEO Andrew McConville told Sky News Host Peter Gleeson gas can play an “important role” in the transition from unrenewable to renewable energy sources.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has “urged greater debate” around the use of gas as an energy source and said “there is no credible energy transition plan for an economy like Australia that does not involve the greater use of gas”.
Australia’s chief scientist Dr Alan Finkel backed the government’s call to support gas suggesting it plays a critical role in renewable energy.
Mr McConville described Mr Morrison’s words as “sensible.”
“No one doubts where we’ve got to get to in terms of greater renewables and lower emissions. The question is how do you get there," he said."
According to Mr McConville, until we develop "storage and system infrastructure that’s reliable gas can "step in" as an interim measure.
