In 1972, Roger Penske brought a modified Porsche 917 to the North American Can Am series and destroyed the competition. This being due in part to the fact it had a 900hp engine under the bonnet.
Then the following year, he brought an updated car to the series, now with 1100hp and destroyed them again. But a mix of this plus the blank cheque nature of Can Am being affected by the global economic crisis killed the series.
