Tunisia’s president plans to submit to parliament a groundbreaking bill making men and women equal under the law.
The president’s commission aims to make inheritance equal for the sexes.
Currently, under Tunisian law a son will inherit double that of his sister from his parents.
In a list of reforms organised by the president’s commission, inheritance is currently the most hotly debated issue.
Tunisia is ruled by a coalition of secular and moderate Islamist parties.
Although the role of religion is limited in gov’t, ”inheritance” is one area where Islamists have shown resistance.
Tunisian society is also just as divided.
