In this weeks video I'm going to be to be reviewing my Carisma Sca-1E Range Rover ,version 1.1 (I think)
As I have owned this RC Crawler now for 2 years, and after breaking every single electronical part in this rig,I think I have some things to say about it, and information that will help prospective buyers of this Rig a good Idea of what to expect from this rig as an owner.
Firstly though I would like to say that for the first year I owned this rig I really didn't know the first thing about proper crawler maintenance, this was my first rig and I kind of just used it, hosed it down and put it away in between uses.
This caused a lot more wear and tear on the remote controlled off roader than was needed. And for anyone looking to buy an RC rock crawler maintenance AKA cleaning and oiling is all part of owning one of these things and will save you money in the long run as part will last longer.
Another thing is these are not 3 cell capable out of the box ,running it on 3 cells pretty much did the ESC and the motor in in very short order (though the above mentioned didn't help as well as this)
the receiver in this rig is water resistant not water proof, so dont use it like I did as a submarine, this will kill off the receiver pretty quickly once a lot of water gets into it and it isn't dried out fully. Saying that though the receiver box on the scale 1 e is one of the best out there. Mounted high up in the body with only a small hole for water to get in through where the Arial passes since not using it like a submarine I have had no further problems with this part and upon opening it up for maintenance, this has never actually had any damp in it. Though now the receiver is wrapped up inside a balloon and cable tied up for added protection
The rock gripper tires that this rig comes with are really nice sticky wheels and are really good on stone at gripping. They are not great at gripping in the wet however and get quite slick when filled with mud but that is to be expected.
Adding lead weights to the inner tires however really does help with the performance of this rig and adding weight low down just makes things more grippy.
Adding a heavy metal roof rack to this crawler with things in it will make it top heavy and more of a scale trailer. Smaller wheels especially those that come with the deluxe kit really make this a much much better rock crawler. And my mate Scott's deluxe version often surprises other rig owners with what it gets over, and makes the whole thing perform well over its price tag.
The spur in my RIG went after about 1 and a half years of owning. I think that this was down to just normal wear and tear and at £4 for a replacement really was not an issue
Speaking of repairs the price of the Carisma scale 1 e's spare parts really lends towards the case of getting this rig as any mistakes made with it will not break the bank, and this is another reason why I recommend this rig for a first time crawler as new owners can really grow with this rig as it breaks and things go wrong with it.
The transmitter that this rig comes with is really quite nice, its comfortable to hold and allows you to adjust the trim on both the throttle and the wheel alignment. But is very no frills but again nothing to complain about there.
The only two things I did not like about this rock crawler out of the box was the lower part of the bumper on the Range rover version, this bit just seems to get in the way a lot and stop the wheels from coming into contact with what ever you are hoping to drive over. But its easy to remove with a Dremel a knife and some time.
the other thing that i did not like that came with the crawler is the battery and charger, the USB charger takes ages to charge the nimah battery and the nimah battery only lasts about 45mins.I replaced this with a lipo 2 cell 5500 50c battery. I get about 2 and a half hours drive time with this and the whole rig handles and performs much better on this. However the stock battery is a nice feature for those without any other RC gear wanting to pic up and play with this straight away.
the last thing to go in this rig from the stock electronics was the servo, this went after about 2 years of use 1 year and 10 months to be exact. But I cant grumble with that as its a long time and managed to survive everything else that I threw at it.
the Lexan shell of this RC is still going after 2 years considering all of the bumps and bashes its took over the years I think this is pretty good going, if I had to guess I would say that the stock body's got about another year of general use left in it but the plan is to retire this soon
I broke the bumper that came with this rig also, after driving it down a 9ft drop but I think that's a pretty easy escape and its impressive that nothing else broke.
I think that this rig is great for a first time crawler though as you can grow with the rig I love mine to bits and wont be replacing it anytime soon
