Recently, a delivery man by the name of Chen Si from Shanghai became popular across China for earning around 1.02 million yuan (equivalent to about 140,890 US dollars) in three years delivering food. His story was heavily promoted by the Chinese state media as an inspirational story, leading to a surge of unemployed people flooding into the food delivery industry. This caused severe chaos within the industry and a significant decrease in delivery rider income.
