The government has announced it will open up the Lamu port for operations by June this year.
According to LAPSSET team officials, the first cargo will be transported using the corridor through the Lamu-Garsen-Garissa road as an optional route until the completion of the railway, pipeline and road project. Authorities from the Garissa County government which has the longest stretch of the LAPSSET project, have promised a raft of incentives including land and tax waivers to support the project. Kenya is banking on the Lamu port to gain its lost stature as a regional shipping hub.
