3. SOUNDBITE (English) George Gordon, co-chairman of old master paintings, Sotheby’s Worldwide:
“We think it is unique in Rubens' oeuvre, but it works extremely well. You have this very martial appearance with these very strong arms and then this very soft face, which is very obviously a portrait, looking straight at us, which is one reason why some people speculated that it's a self-portrait. But it isn't. It doesn't look like Rubens. It is a portrait of somebody that he clearly knew well. After it was painted, we don't know what happened to it until the 1820s. Probably it stayed in the same collection because it's in very good condition and paintings tend to suffer when they change hands.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) George Gordon, co-chairman of old master paintings, Sotheby’s Worldwide:
“For me, Rubens is a great hero. He was an artist, but he's also a great Belgian hero or great Flemish hero. And I think it's a great pleasure, it's an honour, a huge pleasure to bring the painting back here. It feels like a sort of a mission accomplished.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Apostle, senior vice president, Sotheby's New York:
“It will be sold in our May session of Impressionist modern paintings in New York. It's the first time we have done something like this, to offer a major masterpiece by an old master in a non-old master sale. And it's something that makes sense, I think, given the way people are collecting today. We have buyers across the board. People call it contemporary, but cutting-edge contemporary and old masters and 19th-century modern pictures. And people are really mixing them together. So we wanted to get this painting in front of a new audience."

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Apostle, senior vice president, Sotheby's New York:
“We sold ten paintings from the same collection, The Fisch Davidson collection, in January. The paintings were 100% sold wholesale. It also contained a painting by Rubens, but other masterpieces by artists like Orazio Gentileschi, paintings by Procaccini, George de La Tour. So it was a really excellent collection.”
16. Various of the painting
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Apostle, senior vice president, Sotheby's New York:
“That collection we presented as baroque, and this picture has a slightly different quality. Of course it is baroque. It's from that same time period. But there's something more immediate about it, something more contemporary, more modern, that we thought would benefit from a different presentation.”

19. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Apostle, senior vice president, Sotheby's New York:
“In Brussels today, it's going to be in London later in the week, it will go to Asia, Hong Kong, Taipei, Los Angeles. It's going to have a world tour.”
