12. SOUNDBITE (English) Sylvia Yvonne Kausmann, Vice President of the European Parliament:
"I really think that the problem we see here is not a special problem of media. We have it as European Union as a whole and Europe should think about to change its policy dramatically. We don't need a vast fortress Europe, what we need is a Europe which is open for people who need help. And that means for Europe to change its economic politics, its development politics and so on."

STORYLINE:
European officials on Monday said that Europe needs to change its policies on immigration, as the bloc tries to combat the flood of migrants particularly from sub-Saharan and North Africa.
Sylvia Yvonne Kausmann, Vice President of the European Parliament was speaking during a visit to an internment centre in Melilla, Spain's North African enclave.
Kausmann was part of a group of Members of European Parliament that inspected the camp facilities.
She said she was pleasantly surprised to see a kindergarten and facilities for children, however she felt that Europe needed to rethink its policies and strive to be more helpful towards people in need.
Morocco is the gateway to Europe for many sub-Saharan Africans fleeing poverty and has been at the centre of the immigration crisis, with at least a dozen Africans killed as they stormed razor-wire border fences around the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.
Earlier United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said that the rush of migrants into the Spanish enclaves in northern Morocco was a very serious situation and that countries must manage immigration fairly, with respect for the rights of migrants.
On the same day, Morocco began deporting would-be immigrants with a flight carrying 140 Senegalese taking off for Dakar.
The Royal Air Maroc flight took off from Oujda, in northeast Morocco with Moroccan police accompanying the passengers.
The Africans were picked up around Morocco, including near Spanish enclaves on the northern Moroccan coast that have often been swamped by the waves of immigrants.
