This video is about the structure and working of the darlington transistor. This video uses a online circuit simulator. The applications and uses of the darlington transistor are also covered in this animation video.
Darlington transistor is also called as darlington pair. It was invented in 1953 by Sidney darlington.
It contains two bipolar junction transistors connected in such a way that the current amplified by the first transistor is further amplified by the second transistor.
This configuration of transistors can provide much higher current gain in comparison to that obtained by each transistor taken separately.
The current gain of a typical darlington transistor is 1000 or more. Therefore a small base current is enough to make the pair switch on higher switching currents.
It is interesting to note that, a darlington pair behaves as a single transistor. It acts as a single transistor having one base one collector and one emitter.
The high current gain obtained by the darlington transistor is approximately the product of the gains of the two transistors.
One drawback of the darlington pair is an approximate doubling of the base-emitter voltage.
The equivalent base emitter voltage is the sum of both base emitter voltages, since there are two junctions between the base and emitter of the darlington transistor.
