Learning to tell - by ear - if your small engine or generator is running rich or lean is a critical skill when you first get into repairing or diagnosing a problem with your unit.
*Generators should never be operated indoors as carbon monoxide from the exhaust is lethal! This video was filmed for demonstration purposes in the garage with open doors and operated for very short video samples.*
An engine that is running rich has too much gasoline relative to the amount of air in the combustion chamber. This can be caused by the proper amount of air being present (not an issue with the air intake) but too much gasoline being sucked in (carburetor issue), or it can be because the correct amount of gasoline is present (all things being normal) but the amount of air is restricted (clogged air filter, for instance).
An engine that runs lean is one that has too little fuel relative to the amount of air being allowed in the combustion chamber. Same as above, this can happen when the amount of gas is restricted (clogged jets) when the amount of air should be normal (clean air filter), or because the amount of gas would be normal under normal circumstances but the amount of air is too high (missing air filter or intake gasket leak, for example).
