COEUR D'ALENE, ID --- While our rivers and lakes are still cold and unsafe, we have perfect pool weather in the Inland Northwest ahead.
Water safety is important in any body of water and if you want to learn to swim for the first time or brush up on your skills, The Salvation Army Kroc Center in Coeur d'Alene has some opportunities for you.
Adult Learn To Swim lessons at the Kroc Center started on Monday, May 8 and continue every Monday and Wednesday, 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. through May 24.
Only a few spots left, and it costs five dollars to sign up.
It's for adults ages 18 to 50 and is open to anyone who is a beginner at swimming.
The Kroc Center also has swimming activities planned for all ages this Saturday, May 20 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., which is National Learn to Swim Day.
In the Cove Pool, there will be free swim evaluations with 15 minute swim lessons, as well as fun pool games led by swim instructors.
In the Competition Pool, there's the Lifeguard Challenge!
The Lifeguard Pre-test challenge – a timed competition to see who can beat the Kroc Center lifeguards doing the following:
swim 300 yards of freestyle and/or breaststroke
tread water with no hands for two minutes
brick test: swim from the shallow end to the 9 foot end, dive down to retrieve a ten pound brick, then swim holding the brick on the chest using only legs to kick all the way back to shallow.
The fastest person to do all three wins!
The Competition Pool will also have free adult stroke evaluations by swim team coaches, as well as live lifeguard rescue demonstrations.
The event is free to the public but pre-registration is required for swim evaluations, swim lesson times and the Lifeguard Challenge.
