TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, o Lord.
Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us, if someone's brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. Then the second and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. Finally, the woman also died. Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her." Jesus said to them "The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out 'Lord,' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead but of the living, for to him all are alive."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
So the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection. We might think that it is kind of a weird thing. But the idea of a resurrection, of an afterlife was relatively new in Judaism. May held it but the Sadducees were among the conservatives. They were the last to hold out from the old ideas. And so in order to kind of make fun of the idea of the resurrection they came to Jesus with this absurd kind of a thing asking, will she have seven husbands in heaven. Well, Jesus kind of corrects their understanding, the presumption that resurrection is basically life continuing as we know it on earth but maybe in a nicer place. And he tries to explain to them that the resurrected life is a whole different age. It's life but it's so much more than we understand by the term life. Even the things that we enjoy we think, 'oh this is heaven.' no, it's not. Heaven is going to be much, much, much better than that! Much different. We make the same mistakes ourselves, do we not? When we're thinking or fantasizing about heaven we might think oh it will be no more worries, no more work, no more cancer, no more crippling, or pain and all that. And in so doing we're kind of projecting what we experience in this life. Even if we think of the best moments of our life our wedding day, I don't know, a vacation, when we hit a hole in one on the golf course, or whatever, the high points of our life we think of that as being heaven. No. We're going to be dreadfully disappointed if that's all heaven is. It's going to be so much more than that. Even as we think about being reunited with loved ones. Sure, yes, but even more than that we're going to be united for the very first time with love itself. So let's recite our creed, the apostles creed found on page 35.
