Meet Loretta.
She has recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The doctor tells her that her weight plays a significant role in the fact and she is given a meal regimen to follow.
Before she leaves, the doctor also writes her a prescription for a new diabetes medication to lower her blood sugar.
The problem is the medication raises Loretta’s insulin levels which inhibits her ability to use fat as energy. When she returns to the doctor she has gained weight. Loretta becomes upset and discouraged because she gave the new drug management regimen 100% and her health declined.
This is a vicious cycle, and it is a reality in our current health care system.
In studies published by PLoS Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine, people with diabetes who are prescribed "standard drug management" gained 9 pounds, and people who were prescribed "aggressive drug management" gained 18-20 pounds.
Dr. John Mcdougall puts it like this “the goal of drug management is to lower blood sugar even if it caused higher mortality, more heart disease, increased risk of sudden death, and much more hypoglycemia and weight gain."
To show the power of healthy eating habits, Dr. John Mcdougall published research showing that in only 7 days on his plant-based plan: 1,600 people lost an average of 3.1 pounds, they lowered their cholesterol by 22 mg/dl, lowered their blood pressure, and 90% of the patients reduced or stopped their medication.
In fact, the John Mcdougall eating regimen greatly outperformed the diet recommended by the American Diabetes Association.
The power of plants!
So where should you start if you have type 2 diabetes and you want to change your eating habits? You’ll need to do your research and find a certified diabetes educator for guidance.
But for now? Michael pollan has seven words of advice:
"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."
