Sarah Ferguson Reveals Surprising Truth About Her Enduring Bond with Prince Andrew
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, despite divorcing in 1996 after a decade of marriage, have maintained an unusually close relationship, living together at Royal Lodge. The Duke of York's reputation has taken several blows over the years, with scandals surrounding his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of links to a Chinese spy. This has led to his withdrawal from royal holiday gatherings, including the Christmas celebrations at Sandringham and a festive lunch at Buckingham Palace.
Amidst the turmoil, Sarah Ferguson, Andrew's ex-wife, remains steadfastly by his side. Recently, she shared a candid and unexpected reflection on their past marriage, admitting that she would not change a thing. "I was totally and utterly in love with Andrew," she told The Times. "I would do it all over again, 100 percent. He’s the best, a great man with a great heart, and kind. Our wedding was the best day of my life. But I gave up my anonymity that day. I was able to because love conquers all. It's still with us today."
Ferguson emphasized their enduring bond, stating, "I won’t let him down. He supports me as much as I support him. He’s supported me through thick and thin, not just during marriage or divorce. We agree on the three Cs: communication, compromise, compassion."
Their relationship dates back to their childhood, but it wasn’t until 1985, when they were seated together at Royal Ascot, that they began dating. Nine months later, on Andrew's 26th birthday, they got engaged, with Andrew presenting Sarah with a ruby engagement ring. The couple married on July 23, 1986, at Westminster Abbey. They welcomed their first child, Princess Beatrice, in 1988, followed by Princess Eugenie in 1990.
However, despite the outward appearance of a fairytale, cracks began to form in their marriage. Andrew’s demanding naval career kept him away from his family for extended periods, leading to their separation in 1991. Their divorce was finalized in 1996.
In 2010, Sarah reflected on the challenges of their marriage during an interview with US TV host Ernie Manouse, saying, “My deal was that I was marrying my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer. But what I got was not the man, I got the palace and didn’t get him... and the courtiers told me I had to go to Buckingham Palace and he had to go to sea. For our marriage, I saw him 40 days a year."
She later expressed regret over how they were influenced by outside pressures, stating that if they had the chance to do it all over again, they would stand firm against those who pushed them apart. “Both Andrew and I... both of us say now if we could go back, we would definitely play it differently and we should have learned how to play the chess game differently. And maybe we would have still been together because we would have said 'no' to being separated just after our wedding.”
In a 2018 interview with The Daily Mail, Sarah reiterated the unity of their family, despite the separation. She famously stated, “We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other.” She further emphasized, "My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will. The way we are is our fairytale." Ferguson has continually affirmed that the York family remains unified, regardless of their personal struggles.
