In an alternate universe, where Michael Jordan doesn’t exist, people may say that the best Chicago Bulls guard before Derrick Rose was Reggie Theus, and if Theus wouldn’t have been exiled to the bench in a likely attempt to tank for Michael Jordan or Hakeem Olajuwon in the ’84 draft, then we might be talking about him as the Best Bulls guard ever, as although he didn’t do a lot of winning in his career, Reggie Theus was a combo guard, before combo guards were popular, combining effortless scoring and flashy passing into a complete and exciting offensive game. He was among the best players in the state of California during his high school years at Inglewood, as he and Bill Laimbeer battled for top position. Then he would go on to one of the “Runnin Rebels” at UNLV during the beginning of the Jerry Tarkanian era, and would be drafted early in the 1979 NBA Draft to an Artis Gilmore led Chicago Bulls team, where he would become one of the league’s most consistent and reliable players over his entire career, only seeing his consecutive game streak snapped because of NBA politics, as the Chicago Bulls fan favourite would be benched out of nowhere and traded soon after, as he spent years with the Kansas City Kings and Sacramento Kings, as well as a year with the Dominique Wilkins led Atlanta Hawks, the expansion Orlando Magic and the New Jersey Nets, before ending his NBA career after 13 seasons. But he has become a virtual unknown in NBA history after being completely overshadowed by MJ in Chicago and also doing little winning in his career, and, no his game wasn’t perfect, but it was ahead of its time, and aside from Magic Johnson, there wasn’t really anyone doing what Reggie Theus was at his size in the NBA of 80s.
