Manhole covers, also known as access covers, are usually found on roads, pavements, footpaths, car parks, and driveways. They protect people from falling into manhole holes and provide workers with access to underground services. They act as a removable lid to provide access to underground infrastructure.
A different manhole cover will be required if it’s being installed on a road, pavement or car park. We supply manhole covers in a selection of load bearings, suitable for a number of applications. It’s important to pick the right cover for your application, for safety reasons. For example, if the cover is required for a heavily trafficked area, then the cover will need to be strong, durable, and be able to withstand heavy vehicles driving over it.
Here at Cotterills, we stock manhole covers in A15, B125, C250 and D400 load bearings. It’s essential to consider how much weight and traffic the cover will need to bear, in order to pick the appropriate load bearing product.
The next thing to consider is the material of the manhole cover. For example, ductile iron covers are suitable for areas with heavy traffic, whereas our plastic manhole covers are better suited to pedestrian areas.
Both have their own advantages; ductile iron is exceptionally strong and hard wearing which makes it an excellent choice for areas with heavy traffic. It is also highly resistant to corrosion, which extends its lifespan. On the other hand, plastic covers are ultra-lightweight and easy to handle which makes them efficient to transport and install. These types of covers are also highly resistant to corrosion and rust, meaning that they provide quality performance in hostile conditions. Lastly, galvanised steel covers are very durable and strong, which makes them suitable for heavy loads.
