Bidding farewell to a quiet star: The actor Ulrich Mühe is dead. A look back at the key moments of his eventful life.Growing up in the backwaters of Bavaria: "Beste Zeit", the new film from Markus Rosenmüller.
A Man of Quiet Gestures -- German Actor Ulrich Mühe Is Dead
Ulrich Mühe had reached the peak of his long acting career. His last film, the Stasi drama «The Lives of Others» won the Oscar and the European Film Prize. Mühe was an established actor even back in communist East Germany, where he performed on stage and in television and film. But it was only after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 that Mühe became a star across Germany. The Oscar could have been his ticket to a major international career. Sadly, Mühe died of stomach cancer this month. He was 54. KINO pays tribute to this great performer.
German Films Previews -- German Films Are Export Champions
The success of German films at international festivals and awards, not least at the Oscars, has boosted interest in German cinema worldwide. International film distributors have now begun to pre-buy German movies -- that is, to acquire the rights to a German film before it is finished, in the hopes of getting a better deal. German Films invited top international film buyers and distributors to Cologne to screen the latest German productions. KINO was there to see if the buyers would bite.

U.S. country singer Dean Reed was friends with Chilean president Salvador Allende and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat; he staged protests of right-wing military regimes across the world, acted in Italian spaghetti westerns and was the first American to tour the Soviet Union. Almost unknown in the West, Reed was a huge celebrity in the communist world. In his documentary «The Red Elvis», director Leopold Grün traces Reed's story: how the part-time musician outed himself as a Marxist during the height of the cold war, how he moved to East Berlin and became both a spokesman and propaganda tool for world wide socialism. KINO with a portrait of a tragic hero.
