00:00-00:31 - Introduction
00:31-01:53 - Do not take things personally
"Do not take things personally. A case maybe taken away, or someone may seem upset. Often times it has nothing to do with you. They might be having a bad day or the day needs to move faster."
01:53-03:17 - We're all Human
Treat others and yourself as human prior to anything else. Focus on what makes you happy and what you want to prioritize to ensure you can stay happy. Try to do the same for others. We're all juggling so many different things in the hospital that it can be easy to forget that we're all on the same team. A gentle reminder can go a long way. "Don’t forget that your seniors, attendings, hospital staff are humans. They have emotions and things going on in their personal lives. They may seem intimidating because they know more/have been around more. But ultimately they are humans, just like yourself."
03:17-05:43 - Take time to reflect
A simple stroll can do so much more good than I ever thought it could. Much of what I've learned about myself has come from walks like this where I can really ask myself hard questions that I don't have the time to ask or think about when I am in the hospital.
Some general guidelines on reflective walking (taken from: [ Ссылка ]): As a community, we need to take a reflective walk with the following question: Are we on the right path? As you walk and reflect in silence, look at the people around you and notice what’s in their eyes. Note the diversity and observe how they are walking. Is it with purpose and a spirit of engagement? Hear the sounds or the silence and listen to what speaks within you. Think about your work and your attitude. How it is helping future generations? How is it helping right now?
05:43-07:19 - Practice gratitude
It is so easy to see ourselves as "not good enough" in a field that consistently seems to be getting more and more competitive every day. Reframing our perspective is of utmost importance in helping us be more positive and stay in our own lane. Focus on improving your shortcomings, but not on trying to beat everyone else. "A hospital can be a stressful environment to work. When things are getting heated in a moment, step back mentally, take a breathe and go from there."
07:32-10:16 - Be Transparent About Your Needs
You can save yourself a lot of time and energy if you just are open to your team and leadership about your personal strengths, weaknesses, and goals. "It’s okay to ask for what you need/want. I’ve seen this go both ways – some residents who do what’s given to them. Some who want to do cases etc and ask for it. I’m the latter. That’s what comes naturally to me. If I’m asking – I’ve told myself it’s okay if I don’t always get to do what I wish for. I ensure that I never feel entitled to anything."
