As I write this up on the second day of the Old Buckenham Airshow on 28th July, the air over our house reverberates to the sound of Spitfires circling overhead, with the B-17 'Sally B' flying past back to Duxford. Awesome sounds! Anyway, here's my selected highlights from yesterday, Saturday 27th. It really was a fantastic day. We bagged some swag from the pop-up shops and the USAF personnel-staffed 'booster' store, stocked with genuine US treats and service patches and air force inspired clothing for sale. Old Buck was a Liberator Squadron aerodrome during WW2 (James Stewart and Walter Matthau served at Old Buck in WW2) and with its museum and memorials to the US Servicemen, it's like being on American soil. Before the Show started, we were all invited to stand for the National Anthem, followed by The Star Spangled Banner. It was spine-tingling to stand for the US National Anthem... very moving indeed, in the knowledge of what we were about to see flying.
The booster store was staffed by guys and girls from the Lakenheath and Marham US Airbases... and no friendlier folk could you wish to meet! We also picked up some aviation art and tea mugs. The Old Buckenham Airshow is like a half-scale Duxford Flying Legends show, but without the 3 hours to get out of the car park. If you can get along, I *highly* recommend you do so.
