This is a birch. The birch is a common hard-wood tree that calls parts of Europe, Asia, and North America home. The Birch has around 68 known species that range in height from 30-65ft, with white barked birch trees being desirable for their ornamental appearance. Due to its shallow roots, the birch doesn't fare well in times of drought. Despite this, the birch is sometimes called the “pioneer tree” for its expansive growth especially after forest fires. The Birch has played significance in many cultures and religions. In India, the shedding of its bark during the winter was desirable for use as paper. In the Celtic religion, the birch plays a role of spiritual significance, as a symbol of growth and renewal as it rises from the ashes and weathers harsh conditions. They are also associated with the Land of The Dead in Gaelic traditions. It is also the state tree to the state of New Hampshire, and culturally significant to the country of Russia, as it represents the wholesome, natural qualities of Russian women and is associated with marriage and love. Birch trees are often sought after by crafters of fine musical instruments for its excellent tonal quality. The Birch thrives best in moist, well-drained, cool, acidic soils with direct sunlight feeding its leaves. The birch is susceptible to many pests, and a pest control program is recommended for optimal sustained longevity.
