🚗💨 Street takeovers have become a concerning trend in California since the pandemic hit in 2020, with large groups blocking traffic to perform dangerous vehicular stunts. Unfortunately, this surge in illegal activity has led to a rise in injuries and even tragic deaths.

🔒 In response to this alarming trend, California has implemented two new laws aimed at increasing penalties and deterring participation in street takeovers.

📜 First, Assembly Bill 3, which came into effect in 2022, has significantly heightened penalties for those involved in street takeovers.

💔 However, the more stringent law is "Ryan’s Law" (Senate Bill 1472), enacted in 2023 and named in honor of 16-year-old Ryan Koeppel, who tragically lost his life in a street takeover incident. This law empowers prosecutors to charge all participants of a street takeover with felony manslaughter if someone dies during the event.

🚨 These new laws are in addtion to pre-existing charges like reckless driving and exhibition of speed.
