Kumbhakarna, the brother of Ravana, sleeps for 6 months. Lets see why he sleeps for this abnormal time.
Kumbhakarna was very powerful and defeated most of the devas. Once he performed a yajna. The devas became afraid of this yajna because once it was successful Kumbhakarna may ask a powerful boon and kill the devas.
Indra went to goddess Saraswathi and asked for help. Goddess Saraswathi promised him that she will go into Kumbhakarna’s tongue and control the words.
At one time Lord Brahma came before Kumbhakarna and asked for a boon. As soon as Kumbhakarna starts to speak, Goddess Saraswathi started to control kumbhakarna’s speech. Kumbhakarna asked 2 boons from lord brahma.
Instead of asking Indraasana (seat of Indra), kumbhakarna asked Nidraasana (bed for sleep) and instead of asking Nirdevatvam(complete destruction of devas), he asked Nidravatvam (sleep).
So Kumbhakarna felt to non-stop sleep for ever. Ravana came to know this trick and went to lord brahma and said it was a curse, not a boon. The lord replied, my words can’t be failed. He has to sleep. Ravana asked for any other way. The lord replied I can’t undo the boon, but can modify it. Kumbhakarna will sleep for 6 months and will stay wakeup only for one day. After the sun sets on that day, he will go back to sleep for another 6 months. This is the story of kumbhakarna’s sleep.
