Shock Drive Genesect returned to Legendary Raid on An Instinct Hero event being the first Drive form of Genesect became Shiny Eligible.
It is the Geneset/Mega Scizor combo again. Since both of them are being introduced in detail last year, their basic information would be skipped. Basically both of them as Bug/Steel type means Fire-type would be the one you want to use against them.
Since Fire-type are pretty strong, and Genesect/Mega Scizor are both not particularly bulky, they are both possible to be Solo Raided with good Fire-type Pokemon. With Genesect being the more difficult one as Tier 5 boss where it generally need Sun/Clear weather boost damage bonus.
In past year, a few new top Fire-type attackers had been introduces to the game. With the new Fire-type available in the game, namely Mega Blaziken, and Reshiram new exclusive moves - Fusion Flare. It is even possible to Solo Raid Genesect without weather boost bonus now.
However, Shadow Moltres is still more preferred for its higher optimal performance compared to Fusion Flare Reshiram since Shadow Moltres heavily relied on Overheat. Even Reshiram and Shadow Moltres has similar performance in average, Shadow Moltres has both higher and lower bound of performance where the higher upper bound is very preferable for no weather boost Solo Raid over Reshiram's consistently lower optimal performance. Either way, having Mega Blaziken would be a significant upgrade to the team since it has much higher DPS and it could earn more DPS for Reshiram/Shadow Moltres to have room for energy management.
Since I don't have the resources (Reshiram XL candies and Moltres XL candies), its no weather boost Solo Raid remains out of reach for me. Instead, I have determined to retry on the challenge I have failed on the last time Shock Drive Genesect was available in raid - Mega Charizard Y vs Zap Cannon Genesect.
It should not be hard to imagine the difficult part of this challenge. While Fire type comfortably resist Genesect's STAB Bug and Steel type moves, its new moves with Shock Drive - Zap Cannon, hit super-effectively on Mega Charizard Y. While Mega Charizard Y has no trouble Solo Raiding Genesect on any moves except Zap Cannon in Sun weather, it has a hard time against Zap Cannon Genesect in particular and Reshiram were usually preferred as backfilling for Zap Cannon Genesect Solo Raid.
Last year, I was unable to Solo Raid Zap Cannon Genesect with Mega Charizard Y only after 27 failed attempts and eventually gave up on this challenge due to running out of Max Revives. This year, with both more sufficient healing items and better raiding skills, I decided to rechallenge Zap Cannon Genesect with Mega Charizard Y only.
This challenge is difficult for the fact that Zap Cannon hits hard while Fury Cutter only hits mildly on Mega Charizard Y, such that a desync hit to death can have a long lasting effect and cause massive time waste. Compared to X-Scissor, Zap Cannon inflicts significantly more damage on Mega Charizard Y and causing a few extra relobbies, which also costing more time and regen to a point that Mega Charizard Y can only barely defeat Genesect before the timer ran out.
Overall it still remains a hard challenge even though it is done in 2nd attempt this time. If you check the execution carefully you would be surprised on how little regen is throughout this raid. Even with such a low regen, Mega Charizard Y can still only afford one desync hit (that doesn't faint it) and defeat Genesect with barely 2 seconds left at red HP.
