In 1984 John Baily wrote that there was something wrong with the health of the River Wensum Roach. Nearly 40 years later a full in depth study is being carried out to try to find out why what was once one of the Countries top Roach venues, now has barely a handful of Roach for each mile of River. The Broads Angling Services Group, through its dedicated "Upper Rivers" team have enabled this project and provided local support for the Scientists working on the project.
BASG Chair Kelvin Allen, talks to Project leader Calum Ramage about 3 days of Roach sampling in May 2022. Analysis of Water, Sediment, Fish Tissue and stomach contents for over 90 different chemicals make this the most comprehensive study on the Wensum to date.
Conclusions from the project are expected 2023, but from initial findings on the riverbank, no one is expecting good news for the health of the Wensum Roach.
