As part of the ongoing Exploring Radical Female Joy programme we are excited to present to you the third instalment of our year long series. Titled The Movements of Radical Female Joy, this chapter in the programme showcases the work of 4 artists who draw from dance and movement to explore the radical potential of female emancipation, joy and healing. Project curator Prof Catherine McCormack engages in conversation with Dr. Tia-Monique Uzor and artists Vinca Peterson, Dyana Gravina and Hollie Miller.
Tia Monique-Uzor is a dance researcher at the beginning of her career. Her research explores issues of identity, cultural traffic, popular dance and sexuality within African and the African Diaspora Dance. She aspires to contribute in bringing discourses around dance of Africa and the African diaspora to the forefront within academia in the United Kingdom. She has a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Dance and Drama and a Masters by Research Degree in Dance, both awarded by De Montfort University.She is currently an Arts and Humanities Research Council and Midlands3Cities DTP Funded PhD Researcher.
Born in 1973, Vinca Petersen is a multidisciplinary artist who works in the area of social practice, Petersen's works emerge from a deep social and political engagement with underrepresented communities, giving them a voice and recognition. Her photographic oeuvre captures a period spanning 1990-2004, documenting the artist’s experiences as part of the free party and traveller community. Petersen's archive documents a way of life, recording a creative response to breaking barriers between individuals.
Dyana Gravina (She/They) is an interdisciplinary artist, independent curator, activist, mover, and community builder. She is the founding director of Procreate Project, a pioneering arts organisation dedicated to womxn and non-binary artists who are (m)others. Currently MA in 'Gender Sexuality and Culture' at Birkbeck University. They have collaborated and curated projects with partners and venues including RCA, King’s College London, LADA Live Art Development Agency, Ugly Duck, Mimosa House, Women's Art Library, RichMix, Richard Saltoun Gallery, 198 contemporary Art and Learning, to mention a few.
Hollie Miller is a performance artist with an interdisciplinary practice and background in contemporary dance. She has performed internationally in galleries, museums, land art and performance art festivals. She has been artist in residence at: Hogchester Arts (UK), NAIRS Contemporary Art Centre (CH), Serlachius Museum (FI) and La Ira de Dios (AR).
