Shields up, Star Trek fans: Spoilers lay ahead! But fear not: they are deep inside and are preceded by warning buoys. The common understanding of the word “redshirt” in today’s pop culture evolved from a running joke among the devoted fans of the original Star Trek television series. Trekkies would watch each week for a previously unknown crew member of the Starship Enterprise to get killed, invariably while wearing a red uniform tunic, simply to propel the plot. Captain Kirk might say, “Go check behind that big rock, Ensign Perez.” And the captain’s order would spell certain doom for the actor with but one line. “Aaaaah!” we’d hear them say, off-camera, as dramatic music played. Now, although it’s been statistically proven by a mathematician that “redshirts” aren’t any more likely to die, the myth lived on for decades. It was only when almost all of the major characters in the Star Trek films and in the TV series that followed the original started wearing red, that the color signified something other than a writer’s target on their back. Red was no longer a curse. Red now represented power, command and strength. And nobody in Star Trek rocks red locks like Mary Wiseman. Wiseman is the striking redhead who stars as acting First Officer and brilliant but overly loquacious Ensign Sylvia Tilly on the CBS All Access streaming series Star Trek: Discovery. Not only has Tilly grown in responsibility and confidence ever since the show debuted in 2017, 51 years after the franchise was born, but also in popularity. Her character is a fan favorite, recently ranked the “most likable” on the show by ScreenRant.“I love her, and I feel very protective over her,” said the 35-year-old stage and screen actress, who said Tilly is the longest-running role she’s ever performed. “I probably have never had such a deep relationship with a person I've played.”One of the many things that’s interesting about Wiseman is what her friend Mary Chieffo from their Julliard days calls a “running joke,” about how their characters compare to them in real life. Chieffo played the Klingon L’Rell in seasons one and two.“Personality wise, it feels like we would each be more suited to each other's characters,” Wiseman said. “Like Mary is kind of Tilly in person, in real life. She's so full of life and energy, she's so sweet and so empathic and kind... She is an amazing warrior woman, but she has that ‘Tilly’ thing to her, so much. And I can be much more of a protective mama, fierce, you know, aggressive. So maybe a bit more like L’Rell.“I always thought that was kind of funny that we ended up in the same show playing each other's characters.”This week as well as last week, Wiseman gets to show that aggressive side in playing a Tilly that’s very different from the nervous chatterbox genius whom fans have come to know and love.
