Did you know that the country with the most volunteers to the Waffen-SS was the little Baltic nation of Latvia? In all, around 100,000 Latvians ended up serving in the German armed forces or labour forces such as the Todt organization. The Latvians felt that they had been liberated from their previous occupiers, the Soviet Union and World War 2 was a much different story for the Latvians than it was for us in the West. To them, joining up with Germany made complete sense and the two of them got on incredibly well and both fought till the end both in Latvia and in Germany. Until now the two nations had hated eachother but now the two were inseparable and their fates were intertwined. This is the story of the Latvian Legion who chose to work with the Germans for a hope of a free and independent Latvia.
