The Dutch King Willem-Alexander apologised for his country's role in slavery at an event held on Saturday to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.
The king’s ancestors played an important role in slavery and forced labour, according to research commissioned by the home affairs ministry and published last month, The House of Oranje-Nassau, the royal house of the Netherlands, earned the modern-day equivalent of 545 million euros from slavery in Dutch colonies between 1675 to 1770.
