Trentham Gardens Past and Future
According to the Victorian Society Trentham Hall would have easily been one of the truly great houses of England.
The Staffordshire seat of the Dukes of Sutherland - a magnificent Victorian, Italianate house - was eventually doomed by the pollution of it’s magnificent lake by the relentless expansion of Stoke On Trent’s industry.
Although the pollution has long gone, and the gardens have now become a major tourist attraction, along with the lake, hopes that the house, which was demolished by its aristocratic owners just before the first World War, might be rebuilt at a 150 bed conference hotel now seem to be permanently in the back burner.
