A four-year-old speech by a bureaucrat could determine who wins the crypto-trial of the century. The federal government is dragging Ripple and its coin XRP through the mud.

The coin's sales in the United States have been halted. Ripple is being sued by the federal government for billions of dollars in damages for allegedly failing to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC.

Ripple, on the other hand, says that the government is speaking from both sides of its mouth. They're referring to a speech delivered by a Trump administration official in which Ethereum was mentioned. The world's second-largest crypto coin was not a security, hence it was not regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ripple claims that the government is inconsistent, pursuing them arbitrarily while allowing everyone else, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, to function freely.

Emails obtained by Empower Oversight, a nonprofit, reveal a conflict of interest in which the SEC favors certain cryptos over others.

If the records holding such information get to court, the government will have to explain what distinguishes one cryptocurrency from another. And why they're randomly targeting Ripple and XRP.

Many XRIP coin investors, who are currently unable to sell or cash out their purchases, are curious as to why their tax funds are being used to target Ripple and not someone else.

As the cryptocurrency field remains in limbo, with billions of dollars and thousands of jobs on the line, we need more transparency from the SEC and the federal government.
