In this video, I’m answering the question, “What does the bible say about how women should dress?”

I’ll say off the top that the bible does not say it is a sin for a woman to dress beautifully or to wear nice, or expensive clothes.

Now, sometimes the Church, or even individuals, can discourage Christian women from dressing in a way that they perceive to be provocative or inappropriate.

Everyone has different standards and opinions on what is inappropriate, but obviously, there is also a very obvious line.

What it really comes down to is something called Christian modesty.

What is Christian modesty?

Christian modesty is a way of life that is characterized by humility, self-control, and respect for others.

It is a way of living that honors God and reflects his character in our thoughts, words, and actions.

Modesty in dress is one aspect of Christian modesty.

The Bible teaches that women should dress modestly, in a way that is appropriate for their culture and setting.

This means dressing in a way that does not draw attention to our bodies.

It means dressing in a way that is respectful of ourselves and others and avoiding behaviors that could lead to temptation or sin.

It’s important to note that Christian modesty is not about being ashamed of our bodies or our sexuality.

It is about respecting ourselves and others, and it is about honoring God with our lives.

A verse I want to share on this topic is 1 Corinthians 6:20, which reads:

1 Corinthians 6:20

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

This verse isn’t just talking about our physical bodies, it’s talking about our appearance and how we present ourselves to the world.

If you’re unsure about whether you’re dressing appropriately, should ask yourself, “Would I feel comfortable with my appearance if I were in the Lord’s presence?”

A couple of verses that command Christian modesty and sheds more light on this topic are:

1 Timothy 2:8-10

“Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”

This verse can be interrupted in different ways.
Some people believe that this is a clear command for women to dress modestly and to avoid wearing jewelry or expensive clothes.

While others believe that these verses are simply a reflection of the cultural norms of the time in which Paul was writing.

It comes down to personal conviction and you should also yourself the same question, am I honoring God in the way that I’m dressing?

1 Peter 3:3-4

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

I really like this verse as it teaches women that their beauty should not come from outward appearances but from their inner character.

It is saying that a woman who is gentle, quiet, and modest is more beautiful in God's sight than a woman who is outwardly beautiful but lacks these qualities.

These verses are a reminder that God values our inner beauty more than our outer beauty.

It is also a challenge to us to strive to be more like Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions.

So, how should a woman dress according to the bible?

There is no set way women should dress according to the bible.

As a woman, you have the freedom to dress in a way that reflects who you are, as long as you know you are honoring God and you have respect for yourself.

What I can tell you is that when you truly believe in the Lord and you know he loves you, you’ll be able to show that through your actions and how you live your life - not through how you dress.
