The Raleigh Fire Department and Wake County Fire Services are finding new ways to fill shortages of firefighters.
Wake County put $2 million into this recruitment campaign to reach a more diverse pool of candidates.
It marks the first time the county focused on recruiting for racial and gender diversification. It also marked the first time the county paid recruits to train for their future jobs.
The push to fill vacancies is to ensure someone is ready to respond when needed.
As of Thursday, the Raleigh Fire Department has 49 vacancies out of 553 positions. There are 55 new recruits in training to join the city.
Last year, the Raleigh Fire Department had 54 vacancies.
Wake County Fire Services are training its largest and most diverse class ever. Three of the new firefighters will end up at the Fairview Fire Department. The three new firefighters got hired from a record number of applicants - more than 1,000 - to fill 30 positions.
