“How Andy (Discovered "Factory Girl" Edie Sedgwick and) Invented A Superstar” takes us back to 1964, when Warhol opened the doors to his Silver Factory and went in search of a glamorous muse to inspire him. The first ‘Girl of the Year’ would be blonde socialite Baby Jane Holzer. She didn't last too long.
And then Edie Sedgwick showed up. Edie and Andy. They needed no last names. After more than a half century they are still synonymous with the ‘Swinging Sixties’. One was a self-absorbed artist seeking fame, the other a self-absorbed, drug-addicted debutante searching for a purpose in life. They were the perfect couple.
The Superstars became an important publicity vehicle for Warhol, and each year, as the old star burned out, a fresh one was brought in to shine and join the Warhol stable. 'Whips' Mary, Ultra, Nico, Ivy and the others surrounded and gave Warhol the cover he loved.
The film uses uncensored interviews and archival footage to give us an unflinching portrait of a controversial artist, Edie the tragically damaged ‘Warhol ‘Girl of the Year’, and the unconventional others Warhol called his Superstars.
