(5 Feb 1978) Thousands of dancers shimmied their way through the streets of Rio De Janeiro on Sunday (5/2), as the 1978 carnival began. Heavy rains threatened much of the carnival during its first days, but the spirit of the participants, and the spectators who filled the sidewalks to watch, remained undaunted. Rain ruined some gowns on Monday, but still the 20,000 samba dancers of Rio's 10 greatest samba schools, danced past cheering crowds assembled on hastily-erected grandstands
