Palmeiras host Flamengo in Sunday’s Brazilian Serie A action. If history is anything to go by, we should have an exciting game as both outfits fight for important points.

Palmeiras have seen their late title surge implode over the last week, prompting a hardcore element of their support to break into the training ground to scrawl threatening messages directed towards the players. Interim boss Alberto Valentim had made a good start in the dugout after stepping in for the sacked Cuca, but crushing defeats at the leaders themselves, Corinthians, and Vitoria now has Verdão 9 points off the summit with just 5 games left to play.

All focus now has to go on not sinking any further and at least maintaining a top 6 spot, thus securing a place in next year’s Copa Libertadores. The side currently hold a 4 point margin for error on that front, but given it’s Flamengo that are their nearest challengers, this fixture becomes all the more important.

Flamengo arrive the more confident of the two, having picked up a 2-0 win over Cruzeiro at the weekend. Nonetheless, it has been far from a happy campaign for Mengão, with their current standing marking a massive underachievement, given the money invested in the playing squad and the undoubted quality present as a result.
